Agent Triple P is currently in Los Angeles again and, as usual, has been failed to be convinced by the local wines. Until last night, when we ate at a Santa Monica restaurant called Boa. One of my companions reccommended a Californian Pinot Noir called Pisoni Estate. Now there is a lot of nonsense talked about Californian Pinot Noir but we had another go with this one. Shock! It was sensationally good (for $154 a bottle it should have been!) like a Gevrey Chambertin.
Pisoni Vineyard is in the Santa Lucia mountains in Monterey County and is only 45 acres and most of the grapes are sold to other winemakers. Only a tiny proportion are reserved for the Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir (the only wine they produce). It is a high estate for the region at over 1,300 feet which means it gets more sun than other vineyards in the area which are down in the fog layer.
Wine and Spirit Magazine vote it one of the top 25 vineyards in the world and one of the five best in the US. Needless to say you can't buy it in Britain.
