Cheryl Cole in Afghanistan

Former UK national treasure, and now somewhat fallen angel, Cheryl Cole has been in Afghanistan cheering up the troops in a bid to become the new "forces sweetheart".  This will no doubt severely, annoy busty Welsh warbler Katherine Jenkins whose own trip to Afghanistan some time ago propelled her into that position.

Unlike Katherine, who seemed to confine herself to having tea with the troops, Cheryl has been firing weapons, taking part in a mock raid and even meeting with the local Afghan leaders.

Coffee, tea or me, pet?

On her way out she served delighted troops with their meal, perhaps practising for an alternative career if it all goes horribly wrong (again).

Most people on the internet are saying that it is yet another publicity stunt to get her back into the public's favour and we are sure that her agent highlighted the opportunities.  Nevertheless, Helmand province is a very dangerous place and she deserves credit for going out there.  Well done Cheryl!

Christine Bleakely in school uniform

Oh dear, the Daily Mail is having a right go at TV presenter, and fiance of England footballer Frank Lampard, for showing up at her old school in her old school uniform.  Yesterday's report was merely factual noting that her morning TV show, Daybreak, was doing a back to school week and she had appeared at her alma mater Belfast's Bloomfield Collegiate grammar school where she had been head girl.

Today, however, following dozens of negative comments from women on the Daily Mail website the ever-fickle newspaper's attitude has changed, with one of the columnists launching a nasty attack on what was, after all, just a fun TV stunt.  Yesterday the Mail reported that she had "slipped" into her uniform whereas today she "squeezed" into it implying that it was too tight, which it patently isn't.  Probably all these grumpy women are just annoyed that in increasingly obese Britain a 32 year old woman can still get into her school uniform at all.

The thrust of the objections being that dressing like this will encourage perverts to prey on schoolgirls.  This is somewhat bizarre logic, we feel, as Ms Bleakely is patently all-woman whereas we would have thought that paedophiles would prefer young girls.  We are much more disturbed by young girls dressing inappropriately as adults (inspired by the likes of Rhianna et al) than a woman dressing in what is her actual school uniform.  It's not as if she turned up looking like something from St Trinian's.

This is not to say that there isn't a certain frisson about Ms Bleakely's outfit (its probably the dark socks) but all the pictures do to Triple P are to make him  much more interested in the heretofor unregarded Ms Bleakely rather than go hanging around school gates.

We actually think Ms Bleakely looks quite splendid!

Indonesian Police women

Agent Triple P has only been to Indonesia once, and then only for two nights, but does remember that the girls were very attractive there.  We were intrigued by these photographs of Indonesian Police women, as we like a lady in uniform.  They make you want to confess just so you can be arrested and searched!

Spanish Air Comet stewardesses pose for calendar

A group of stewardesses (we can't be doing with all this flight attendant nonsense) from bankrupt Spanish airline Air Comet have stripped off for a tasteful calendar aimed at bringing attention to the fact that they are owed up to nine months pay.

Given that they are selling the calendar for 15 Euros a time they presumably hope to make some money too, although its bad luck on the ugly ones who don't have any calendar income.

Although, apparently, they have only printed 1500 copies and given the interest from the press they might need to do another print run!

Air Comet was founded in 1996 as Air Plus Comet (there is another Air Comet in Chile) and were based in Madrid serving long haul destinations in Latin America.

In 1997 they took over the routes of the bankrupt Air Madrid and became Spain's second largets airline after Iberia.

It all started to go wrong in early 2009 when the airline couldn't pay its leasing fees to its German bank.

The Spanish transport ministry withdrew their operating licence when it realised the airline couldn't pay for fuel.

Its collapse left thousands of passengers stranded and the Spanish government had to spend 6.3 million Euros on leasing four planes to bring them all home.

The airline has made all 640 of its employees redundant including these lovely creatures.

Agent Triple P can't help but observing (given that we missed a trip to Washington DC last month due to the BA strike) that he hasn't seen more than a couple of attractive BA stewardesses in ten years of regular flying but Air Comet had at least a Calendar's worth of them!

Triple P has scoured the internet looking for the young ladies calendar pages (Penelope Cruz-a-like Miss November is Triple P's favourite) and managed to track down all but Miss May so we will have to content ourselves with a screen capture from a TV piece about them.

Well we wish the ladies well in their endeavours: their aim of bringing attention to their plight has probably succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

Above, we have the girls in happier days before they had to hand back their uniforms leaving them nothing to wear.

Tornado Women

Flt Lt Juliette Fleming

Well, our title might sound like a 1950's Pulp film but Agent Triple P is glad to see our first ever all woman ground attack RAF crew safely back from Afghanistan, despite some rather hairy moments when they had to fly at 500mph at 100 feet altitude to scare away a Taliban rocket crew targeting a British base.

Fast woman!

Unfortunately, RAF policy seems to militate against dropping bombs on these people. Supposedly so as not to upset the local civilian population but more likely because they can't afford the bombs in an armed forces that has been hacked to bits by that one-eyed Scottish idiot, Gordon Brown. Still, it has to be a concern that this particular crew are alive to fight another day when a quick squirt from the Tornado's twin Mauser BK-27s would have sorted them out permanently.

Flt Lt Juliette Fleming is, we have to say, rather more attractive than your average RAF pilot so she must be a Godsend to the publicity types. Agent Triple P's family has quite a strong RAF connection (grandfather was RFC pilot in Avro 504s during WW1, great uncle a Hurricane pilot in WW2 and uncle a pilot post war) and, in the 70th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain, we feel that it is important to give Flt Lt Fleming (and her co-pilot Nikki Thomas) their due after flying 24 combat missions.

A 31 Squadron Tornado in flight

Flt Lt Fleming's unit is 31 Squadron which was formed in 1915 and was almost immediately sent to India. In 1919, ironically, the squadron saw service in Afghanistan during the evacuation of Kabul.

Vickers Valentia transport bombers

In 1939 the squadron was equipped with the obsolete Valentia biplanes which were able to provide a dual transport/bombing role. The squadron stayed in India until 1947 when it was disbanded, then reformed in Hendon. In 1955 the unit moved to Germany and was equipped with Canberras. These were replaced by Phantoms in 1971, Jaguars in 1976 and then the Tornado GR1 in 1984. The unit is now based at RAF Marham where, with 9 Squadron it forms the Marham Tornado Strike Wing.

Tornado GR4

The squadron flies Tornado GR4s which is the upgraded version of the original GR1 and was firts introduced in 1996 incorporating lessons learned in the 1991 Gulf War. The original Tornado was a UK, German, Italian co-venture. Now rather elderly (the prototype first flew in 1974) the plane is unusual in that it has seen combat with all four nations that bought it. Britain, Italy and Saudi Arabia in the Gulf War and Germany in Kosovo. The latter being the first combat operations conducted by the Luftwaffe since World War 2.

31 Squadron Tornados amongst others at RAF Marham, King's Lynn, Norfolk

Its distinctive, large tail gives it an aggressive, hunched demeanour on the runway which makes it one of Triple P's favourite-looking contemporary fighter planes.

Cheryl Cole sings?

Cheryl. Bizarre uniform.

Well, you couldn't tell as Agent Triple P contemplated her frankly rather embarrassing turn on the X-Factor on Saturday. The real give away, I suppose, was that she was holding an enormous microphone that covered her face rather than one of the small ones that attach to the head that people use when they are dancing about. Given her huge cap was pulled down so low, you could hardly see if she was there at all.

In fact her rather bizarre outfit reminded me of nothing else than a Games Workshop Imperial Guard Commissar. We think that perhaps she is trying to be Madonna. At least she was better than Whitney Houston.

Cheryl as she should be. Dressed down and not singing.

Traffic Lights: the North Korean Alternative

We had a visit from a group from North Korea this week. Always slightly scary to know that you are on their database.

We have never been to Pyongyang (although we nearly did once) but apparently they do not have traffic lights there. Instead they employ rather smart uniformed girls at every junction. They don't seem to have any protection from the traffic, they just stand in little circles painted on the road, blow their whistles and wave their batons in a pre-set way which indicates the equivalent of red, amber and green. Indeed, North Korean drivers have to learn these signals as part of their driving test.

Presumably they use girls because they are cheaper and quicker to replace than traffic lights if they get hit by a large lorry carrying yet another statue of the Leader.
