Daunt Books Cheapside

There used to be a couple of bookshops in Cheapside (between Bank and St Pauls) but both disappeared some years ago.  It is particularly welcome to  see the appearance of a new independent bookshop at 61 Cheapside, therefore.

Daunt Books have been in Marylebone for around twenty years but their City branch is just two weeks old.  A large-ish two storey affair, it uses a unique approach downstairs where it sorts books by geographic regions.  If you are off to the Balkans, say, in one section they have travel, history and novels relating to that region.  This is an excellent idea.  Only the other week we were off to Istanbul and fancied finding a novel set there.  This shop lets you do that.

We hope it is a success in the intellectual dustbin that is the City.  We were discussing the shop with one of the ladies who works there who was, quite simply, one of the most beautiful women we have ever met.  A splendid advertisement for the place.  We will be a regular visitor!

Miss Universe 2010: Jimena Navarrete

Well, Agent Triple P is in Mexico at present so, as we haven't has a beauty queen on this blog for a while it is probably only right to celebrate, somewhat belatedly, the accession of Miss Mexico, Jimena Navarrete to the Miss Universe title.

Agent Triple P has been rather harsh on the attractiveness of Mexican women in the past, however when a stunning one comes along (such as the absolute cracker we were sitting with at dinner last night) they can be truly spectacular and precisely fulfil Triple P's criteria of what a lovely girl should look like.

Jimena Navarrete Rosete was born on was born February 22, 1988 in Guadalajara (famous for its lovely girls, according to one of our Mexican friends), Jalisco. She became Miss Jalisco on July 16, 2009 and followed this up by becoming Miss Mexico on September 20, 2009 in Mérida, Yucatán. She was the second consecutive Miss Mexico from the state of Jalisco succeeding her close friend Karla Carrillo who had encouraged her to enter the contest.

She entered the Miss Universe competition, which was held at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas (a place of which Triple P has fond memories) on August 23rd this year and beat off 84 other competitors to take the title in something of a surprise win.

This year one aspect of the contest was controversial in that a number of girls were shown in official photographs press wearing only bikini bottoms and body paint.  "It's alarming that this has been turned into a Playboy-esque masquerade," said the grumpy Angie Meyer, a former pageant employee.  Jimena's picture was more modest, however.

Her win broke a two year winning streak by Venezuela. There has only been one other Mexican Miss Universe: Lupita Jones in 1991.

The 5'8" lovely is a worthy winner and a very strong answer to Triple P's usually somewhat negative impression of the looks of Mexican women.
